Pea, Purple Podded

This is a record of how long this particular set of seeds took to germinate and how they looked at various stages from first appearance to the development of the first set of true leaves and beyond. I hope this will prove useful.

Variety: Purple Podded

Sown indoors: 3rd June 2013

First Seedling: 9th June 2013

Germination: 6 days

Newly emerged and 2 day old seedlings:

At 5 days old, these seedlings are growing at a steady pace

7 days old now and already some of the seedlings have reached 5 to 6 inches in height. I’ve potted all these on now and fastened them to plant stakes

At 2.5 weeks old, the seedlings have been in pots for a week now and are a good foot tall. I need to find them a permanent space outside.

After the pigeon damage suffered by my mangetout, I decided to pop the peas into a large flexi tub and keep them in the greenhouse. They are now 3 weeks old.Peas Purple Podded

Now 6 weeks old, the plants have reached the height of the greenhouse, I have nipped out the growing tips, the first flowers are opening and we even have the first pod starting to grow:

Sadly despite what appeared to be a good start, these plants didn’t really amount to much in the way of pea pods, although we had a good number of flowers. Today, as part of my autumn tidy up, I took the decision to compost the plants and will try again next year.
