Cauliflower, All Year Round

This is a record of how long this particular set of seeds took to germinate and how they looked at various stages from first appearance to the development of the first set of true leaves and beyond. I hope this will prove useful.

Variety: All Year Round
SownGreenhouse: 10th August 2013
First Seedling: 15th August 2013
Germination: 5 days

This is a variety I have never grown before and these seedlings are intended to go into the ‘Winter Garden’ sections of both my home and the school garden.

These seedlings are now just over 2 weeks old and have developed their first true leaves.

At 5.5 weeks the seedlings are doing okay and I have planted one into a large tub and will attempt to grow this in the greenhouse, through the winter.

At 7 weeks old, this seedling is starting to look much happier.

By the end of the year, the plant is starting to get quite a bit bigger

Another 6 weeks (7th February) and the cauliflower is doing nicely within the protective walls of the bubble wrapped greenhouse. It is much further along than the other seedlings from this sowing which are growing under the much colder and less protected environment of the growhouses outside:

  1. Your blog has been a godsend with all the seedling posts. When did you plant your cauliflower in a separate pot and did you put it deep underground?

    • Hi,

The cauliflower went in to its’ tub around September, as I recall and straight into the greenhouse. The tub is probably around 10 inches deep and I insulated the greenhouse with bubble wrap to help keep the worst of the frost off. It seems to have worked but the real proof will come if this plant produces a cauliflower 🙂
