This is a record of how long this particular set of seeds took to germinate and how they looked at various stages from first appearance to the development of the first set of true leaves and beyond. I hope this will prove useful.

Variety: Radicchio
Sown indoors: 23rd February 2014
First Seedling: 1st March 2014
Germination: 6 days
Germination ratio: 1/5 seeds sown

I have no idea why there was such a poor germination rate but I will obviously I’ll need to sow some more of these and see what happens.

This picture shows the seedling at 9 days old and with the first of the true leaves starting to grow.

4th April: The seedling has grown and I have potted it on and moved it to the greenhouse.

13th April: 6.5 weeks old and growing steadily.

17th May: The greenhouse radicchio were transplanted out into the raised beds as I now had the fine insect mesh to protect them form pests such as the cabbage whites. They were used to infill the gaps in the direct sown row of radicchio.

Planted out (larger specimens) and direct sown radicchio, growing alongside each other and a direct sown plant.

Radicchio   Radicchio

30th May: The plants are starting to look quite colourful
